Summary
The City of Darien, Illinois, selected McDermott to provide a steel standpipe with an overall height of 153.7 feet, a diameter of 44 feet, and a capacity of 1.5 million gallons. The standpipe is composed of more than 350,000 pounds of steel.
This unique standpipe was built to look like a working lighthouse. Architectural enhancements included a unique coned roof, five pilasters, two balconies and 10 three-dimensional simulated and machined windows (approximately 5 feet x 7 feet). The dual functioning balconies and pilasters both support and hide numerous cell antennas and associated cables to provide additional income for the city.
Due to the extremely tight site, the tank was built entirely from ground level by starting with the roof and jacking each shell ring into place. Balconies and pilasters were attached as the tank was jacked up. Materials were staged as needed due to lack of laydown space. This structure was named the 2007 Tank of the Year in the standpipe steel tank category by the Steel Tank Institute / Steel Plate Fabricators Association.
