Hydrogen

With more than 300 hydrogen projects executed across multiple industries, McDermott has experience across the hydrogen value chain in generation, cleanup, storage and distributions.

What We Do:

Our broad scope of services applies to greenfield, brownfield, first-of-a-kind, onshore and offshore facilities and ranges from feasibility and concept studies to integrated engineering, procurement, fabrication and construction (EPFC), smart modularization and low-carbon EPCI for:

  • Renewable and Low-Carbon Hydrogen Production
  • Hydrogen Liquefaction & Storage
  • Hydrogen Derivatives (Ammonia)

For green hydrogen, McDermott has deployed demonstration and commercial-scale water electrolysis projects. We engage with customers from early concept, feasibility and technology selection to the design-build cycle of the project through completion with an emphasis in integration and system-wide optimization to deliver demonstration and commercial-scale water electrolysis projects.

In blue hydrogen, we’ve completed over 200 steam methane reformer projects globally and offer our customers expertise and partnerships to deploy alternative methane reforming technologies most appropriate for their hydrogen projects.

Our integrated approach to blue hydrogen projects is driven by a long track record in carbon separation and removal, strong capture technology partnerships, knowledge of onshore and offshore compression and injection.

McDermott CB&I Storage Solutions is a proven leader in liquid hydrogen (LH2) and other forms of low temperature and cryogenic energy storage systems. As the energy transition gains traction, we continue to advance our technology and refine our portfolio of storage solutions to meet the future demands of our customers, such as:

  • Physical Storage
    • Compressed Hydrogen
    • Liquefied Hydrogen
  • Chemical Storage
    • Ammonia
    • Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers

In fact, CB&I Storage Solutions designed and built the world’s largest liquefied hydrogen sphere for NASA and completed front-end engineering and design for a 40,000 cubic meter sphere for liquefied hydrogen for a large integrated energy company.

We advance hydrogen development globally through our active membership in the Hydrogen Council and in the US through Hydrogen Forward and have partnered with academic, public and private institutions to advance the development and scale-up of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen.
