Houston Chronicle: The future of offshore technology is both simple and complex

5/3/2019

In an article for the Houston Chronicle about the future of offshore technology, Vaseem Khan, McDermott's Global Vice President of Engineering, discusses how McDermott is focusing on digitization in the cloud to manage projects.

“We do digital project delivery. It’s not just a phrase to make an old-fashioned industry seem sexy,” said Vaseem. “One of the banes of the industry has been tons of information residing in all these different databases.”

McDermott offers digital offshore solutions through Gemini XDTM, an advanced platform that improves efficiency and productivity throughout the project lifecycle for McDermott’s global projects. With digital workflows and an environment specifically tailored for oil and gas project execution, the platform makes it easy to link, share and retrieve information instantly. The platform enables McDermott to digitize and standardize its processes, driving down costs by eliminating legacy systems and simplifying work processes into a single integrated engineering platform. Vaseem talks about how a digital twin of the as built facility can help operators run the platform more efficiently.

In the interview, Vaseem also discusses efforts to create more standardization, which also can help operators reduce costs. One way is to standardize specifications, designs and components of offshore projects. He adds that not everything should be custom-made and that more standardized designs can work just as well.
