McDermott was awarded a contract from Woodside Energy Limited for the North West Shelf Venture onshore gas plant near Karratha, Western Australia.
McDermott’s work scope included the mechanical erection for the Phase V liquefied natural gas (LNG) production train that has a design capacity of 4.4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The Phase V expansion increased the plant's capacity to 16.3 MTPA, making it one of the largest LNG complexes in the Asia-Pacific region. McDermott was previously responsible for mechanical erection of the plant's LNG Train IV Project.
McDermott’s portion of the project included the LNG train, fractionation unit, power generation unit, topsides for the jetty extension and interconnecting pipe racks, and the fuel gas and boil-off gas systems. Up to 1,800 people were employed at Karratha during the peak of construction.
The LNG Phase V Expansion project is a world-first for modular construction. There are a total of 75 modules with a combined weight of 17,500 tonnes. The biggest Phase V module is the main liquefaction unit, which is approximately 1,920 tonnes and 35 meters in height.
