Southern LNG awarded McDermott with a lump sum turnkey contract to further expand the Elba Island LNG import terminal near Savannah, Georgia, USA. McDermott provided the engineering, procurement and construction for the expansion project.

McDermott's work scope included a new 200,000 cubic meter liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tank—which is the largest LNG storage tank in North America—a 540 million standard cubic feet per day (SCFD) send-out system, new vapor handling system, and all associated electrical, mechanical, civil, instrumentation and controls work. The vapor handling systems were also modified to facilitate simultaneous unloading of two LNG ships.

The double-wall steel storage tank has an outer diameter of 289 feet and stands 123 feet tall. The tank consists of a nine percent nickel inner tank and a carbon steel outer tank. The new vaporization system is designed to be identical to the existing facility and uses three submerged combustion vaporizers, each of which are kept inside an aboveground stainless steel tank. Also included in the send-out system are two booster pumps, three secondary pumps and a metering system.
