In 2009, Chevron Australia Pty Ltd awarded McDermott a contract for the mechanical, electrical and instrumentation work on the Gorgon Project on Barrow Island, Western Australia. The Gorgon Project is a joint venture between the Australian subsidiaries of Chevron (Operator), ExxonMobil and Shell, to develop the Greater Gorgon gas fields, located between 130 km and 200 km off the northwest coast of Western Australia. The Greater Gorgon gas field, Australia’s largest-known gas resource, contains about 40 trillion cubic feet of gas.
The contract work scope included the structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation and commissioning support for the construction of three LNG trains (with a total capacity of 15 million tonnes per annum), including associated utilities and a domestic gas processing and compression plant. McDermott had a continuing presence on the project, having been contracted to provide the engineering, procurement, fabrication and construction of the Gorgon Project’s two 180,000 cubic meter full-containment LNG tanks, four condensate tanks and the associated utilities.
