Summary

Featured as one of POWER magazine's top plants in October 2010, PPL Brunner Island features pollution control upgrades through flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems installed by McDermott. Our work at the clean coal-fired plant includes Units 1, 2 and 3 for a total of 1,540 MW. McDermott serves as a one-stop shop for all air quality control needs on new and existing units, helping our clients meet their goals of clean, efficient and economical electricity generation. At Brunner, our air quality control services are helping to remove up to 97 percent of incoming sulfur dioxide at the plant. The FGD systems at Brunner are composed of limestone forced oxidation scrubbers that produce synthetic gypsum as a by-product. The gypsum by-product is shipped offsite to wallboard manufacturing facilities. In addition, the plant features the following:

A single absorber system that treats the combined flue gas from Units 1 and 2
A dedicated absorber system that treats flue gas from Unit 3
A dual-flow, sing-tray design on absorbers
Voluntary Protection Program "STAR" certification from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration

McDermott also provided engineering services for an electrostatic precipitator replacement on Unit 2 and a retrofit on Unit 3. The small footprint for Unit 2 contributed to the project's scope and complexity. For Unit 3, new inlet fields were installed on the existing precipitators, while existing wire plate precipitators were demolished. The modifications significantly reduce particulate emissions from the plant, which began operations in 2009 and 2007, respectively.
