Summary

McDermott was awarded this major offshore contract for Concept Definition and Project Specification (CDPS) for the Buzzard installation and, following the award, our team started preliminary work on the Nexen Buzzard Project. McDermott spent a year developing the concept, proving the project viability, and preparing the project specifications. This was followed by the detailed design phase. Approximately 35,000 design deliverables were issued by McDermott during the project and 17,000 vendor documents were reviewed. Our team continuously provided support for the onshore fabrication and commissioning phases. The development of The Buzzard reservoir consists of three piled steel structures supporting separate wellhead, production and quarters/utility facilities linked through bridges to support well production, oil and gas processing, living quarters and utility systems. The production platform receives multiphase reservoir fluids via the bridge linked wellhead platform and processes these to separate crude oil, gas and water. All three topsides as well as the bridges and the flare boom were designed by McDermott. The wellhead deck measures 40 by 54 meters and has an operating weight of 4,300 tonnes. The production deck measures 37 by 88 meters and has a 13,300 tonnes operating weight. The quarters and utilities deck measures 34 by 86 meters and has an operating weight of 11,600 tonnes. Each of the two bridges linking the topsides weighs over 300 tonnes and the production platform also supports the inclined flare boom, measuring some 85 meters and weighing 400 tonnes.
