Summary
McDermott’s major projects involve advanced gas turbine technology and innovative use of modularization, as seen in our work at the Astoria Power Plant. The Astoria Power Plant was recognized by New York Construction magazine with its "Best of 2006" award for industrial projects, Phase I of the project in Queens, New York. The project was completed in just 21 months, with commercial operations beginning at the plant in May 2006. The facility's primary equipment includes two GE-7FA combustion turbine generators, two heat-recovery steam generators and a steam turbine generator. The balance of the plant includes an air-cooled condenser, dry urea system, gas compressor building and a switchyard and transmission line. McDermott’s use of in-house modular construction techniques helped meet crucial milestones in a tight project schedule. Fully constructed heat-recovery steam generators were shipped from Indonesia—some 12,000 miles from the plant—and installed at the site. The 24-cell air-cooled condenser was also built off-site and lifted into place at the site. McDermott’s ability to provide integrated services from its different business groups is demonstrated at Astoria, as evidenced by the use of modularized pipe racks and various equipment skids, which were fabricated and assembled at McDermott’s facility in Delcambre, Louisiana.
