Styrenics / Phenolics / Carbonates
This group of chemicals is used to produce common products such as tires, packing material, insulation, epoxy resins and polycarbonate plastics (e.g., eyeglasses). Lummus Technology licenses many technologies in this important chemical chain.
Styrene is produced from ethylbenzene which is the combination of ethylene and benzene. Phenol is produced from cumene which is the combination of propylene and benzene. Diphenyl carbonate formed from phenol and dimethyl carbonate is the key feedstock to produce polycarbonates. Dimethyl carbonate is formed from carbon monoxide and methanol. Benzene is produced as a by-product of steam crackers and FCC. On-purpose production of benzene via hydrodealkylation is possible from pyrolysis gasoline (PYROTOL®), toluene (DETOL®) or coke oven light oils (LITOL®).
Lummus Technology offers reliable and proven technologies for the production of ethyl benzene, styrene monomer, cumene, phenol, dimethyl carbonate and diphenyl carbonate.
The following licensed technologies can bring added value by supplementing or upgrading by-products from the primary styrenics, phenolics and carbonates production processes:
