Petrochemicals, produced from natural gas or liquid hydrocarbon feedstocks, are key building blocks for a wide range of products derived from olefins and aromatics, including plastics, resins, fibers, solvents, detergents and adhesives. Lummus Technology's petrochemical technology portfolio includes the building block processes, as well as a large range of chemical intermediates and polymers.

We offer a diverse line of chemical technologies along product lines such as styrenics, phenolics, light hydrocarbons (C3-C5 dehydrogenation, butadiene extraction) and other assorted specialty chemicals including dimethyl carbonate, diphenyl carbonate and maleic anhydride.

We license the most widely used ethylene technology in the world, with about 40 percent of global capacity based on our process. A significant by-product of the ethylene process when cracking liquid feeds is propylene. Olefins conversion technology (OCT) optimizes the balance among ethylene, propylene and butylenes depending on current market demand and pricing. We also offer the Novolen® gas phase polypropylene process for the production of a full range of polypropylene products.



Olefins are a class of chemicals such as ethylene, propylene and butylene. Olefins are the building blocks for a wide variety of products such as plastics, rubbers and solvents. They are produced from natural gas liquids and refinery products such as naphtha, kerosene and gas oil.

Styrenics / Phenolics / Carbonates

This group of chemicals is used to produce common products such as tires, packing material, insulation, epoxy resins and polycarbonate plastics (e.g., eyeglasses). Lummus Technology licenses many technologies in this important chemical chain.


Aromatics are used to produce a wide range of products including fibers, films and plastic bottles. The most common aromatics are benzene, toluene and xylenes (BTX) which are products of steam crackers and refineries.
