Summary
McDermott performed a lump sum turnkey contract to design and construct an LNG storage facility for E.G. LNG. The facility stores LNG produced by a liquefaction plant that E.G. LNG had built on the island. McDermott’s work encompassed the engineering, procurement and construction of LNG tankage with total capacity of 272,000 m³. This included civil foundation work, tank insulation, painting, in-tank pumps, piping, electrical and instrumentation to grade within five meters of tanks. McDermott's scope also included the design and construction of nine smaller tanks for facility storage and processing.
Following the award of E.G. LNG Project in March 2004, engineering started immediately with LNG tank design work in the McDermott Plainfield office and API 650 tank work in McDermott's Houston office. In September 2004, the McDermott project team mobilized on site and civil work was started. The LNG tank air raises were executed in July and August 2005. Within the first quarter of 2006, construction of inner tanks, external platforms and piping grade were completed. Installation of Perlite in the tanks was completed in August 2006. Electrical and Instrumentation work was completed in October 2006.
McDermott completed its scope of work, including nitrogen purge of the LNG tank, in November 2006. The work site being 60 meters above sea level, some temporary and permanent utilities had to cross-slope dense rain forest. The moist, unstable soil conditions and steep grade changes made construction challenging. During peak construction, McDermott had a team of 172 personnel working on Bioko Island. A total of 830,000 work hours were completed with zero lost time incidents.
McDermott’s execution plan capitalized on the global resources of the company. Fabricated materials for the outer tanks were shipped from McDermott’s fabrication facility in South Africa, inner tank materials from Europe, and piping from the USA. Procurement was coordinated through the McDermott Dubai office, with assistance from McDermott’s purchasing offices in South Africa and The Netherlands. Operation support, QA/QC, painting, accounting and equipment was also coordinated through McDermott's Dubai office.
McDermott also constructed three low-temperature tanks for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage, three condensate bulk storage tanks, and retrofitted existing tanks for conversion to alternate service as part of Marathon’s Alba Phase 2B LPG Expansion Project. In addition, as part of the expansion project, McDermott designed and fabricated a modular cryogenic gas processing plant that was delivered to the island in 2004 with a capacity of 870 million standard cubic feet per day.
