Fixed Platforms

Setting standards for offshore fixed platforms since the oil industry began.
Functionally, geographically and operationally integrated across all EPCI phases, we consistently deliver high-quality fixed platforms completed safely, on schedule and within budget.
Since the inception of the offshore industry in the late 1940’s, McDermott has pioneered numerous technological advancements. We have set many industry standards and performance records through innovative designs and construction techniques for hundreds of shallow-water platforms worldwide:
  • Topsides – from well-head decks to integrated drilling and production topsides
  • Substructures – multi-leg jackets and piles, and compliant towers
  • Mooring buoys
Engineering

We execute engineering from feasibility and concept studies to detailed design, installation and commissioning for increasingly large and complex fixed platforms in open waters, hundreds of miles from shore. Through innovative and customized technology, our solutions have become industry standards and earned hundreds of U.S. and international patents.

Our engineers are closely associated with all project phases and engineer with construction and installation in mind, setting realistic technical, cost and schedule expectations for green and brownfield developments.

Construction

From Morgan City, Louisiana, we fabricated the first shallow-water, steel jackets for the Gulf of Mexico in the late 1940’s. Since then, we have amassed unequaled experience on projects that are industry firsts including, the world’s deepest tripod jacket and Compliant Tower, the first fixed platform in greater than 1,000 feet water, and the longest and heaviest offshore bridge. From our newest facility on the Gulf of Mexico, we have undertaken several Bay of Campeche projects and continue to grow our experience.

Serving the traditional shallow water Asia Pacific market, our Batam fabrication facility has constructed multiple large integrated topsides up to 21,000 tons, often concurrently. In the well-established shallow-water Arabian Gulf, our Jebel Ali yard handles multiple projects for repeat regional customers; and we have supported Caspian Sea field development since the early 1990s. We excel at upgrading existing infrastructure and transferring knowledge to new geographies, to develop new facilities.

Installation

We have launched numerous jackets vertically and horizontally using our customized barge Intermac 650, and our derrick barges have lifted or upended substructures to their final positions. Our crews are experts at drilling and grouting foundations and underwater pile driving to secure substructures in place.

We execute single lifts up to 4,400 tons, but as topsides become larger and heavier, we safely and cost-effectively install decks by dual lift or float over, requiring thorough planning, specialized technology and precise execution. Often operating in highly regulated offshore settings, for safety, environment and labor matters, we understand thorough planning and good communication are essential.
